Since these roles differ significantly, your approach to job postings must adapt when seeking an independent contractor versus an employee.

Independent professionals pursue self-employment not just for the lifestyle and professional benefits, but also for the opportunity to work with high-quality clients on long-term projects. To successfully recruit independent talent, it’s crucial to engage with them as business owners.

A job posting for independent contractors should be treated like a request for proposal (RFP), including similar details. Additionally, your posting should outline the specifics that will be included in the contract once the engagement terms are negotiated. Here are eight essential tips to help you craft a job posting specifically designed for independent contractors.

1. Do your research

Before you start drafting your job posting, follow these steps:

  • Get input from others
    If the role is part of a team, reach out to other team members (if possible) to get their input about the role and what would make a contractor a good cultural fit. In addition, connect with your HR people, other managers, and anyone else who would be interfacing with the role.
  • Check for existing job descriptions

Review your job description carefully. Does it include the information an independent contractor needs to make a bid/no-bid decision? Have you included the details that will be part of the contract? Also, assess the inclusivity of the language and remove any words or terms that could reflect unconscious bias.
